Dear [your legislator],

I am writing today to express support of [HF5 / SF123], which would provide no cost breakfast and lunch to all students in Minnesota.

I support making sure all students have access to school meals because:

[pick 1-2 points to elaborate on]

  • School meals raise student health and academic achievement by improving children’s diet and reducing hunger.

  • Children are getting their healthiest meals at school.

  • With the rising cost of food, many families are struggling with food insecurity, including 1 in 6 children across MN.

  • The current system fails to fully identify those in need (1 in 4 food-insecure kids doesn’t qualify for financial help with school meals)

  • Other states are already providing universal free school meals to their students.

  • Most adults, whether they live with school-aged children or not, support universal free school meals.

    • 84% of Minnesotans believe that free school meals positively impact childhood hunger.

    • 81% of Minnesotans believe free school meals positively impact children’s ability to learn in school.

    • 62% of Minnesotans across party lines support action in our state to permanently offer school meals at no charge to all students, regardless of income

We urge you to support [HF5 / SF123], so we can continue to ensure that all kids in Minnesota are well fed and ready to meet their full potential in the classroom and beyond.

Sincerely,
