Universal School Meals is Signed into Law by Gov. Walz on March 17, 2023

On March 17, 2023, Gov. Walz signed HF5/SF123, a bill making school lunch and breakfast free for all Minnesota students, into law. Alongside hunger advocates and students at Webster Elementary School in Northeast Minneapolis, the Governor spoke on the impact this bill will have on families across our state. “As a former teacher, I know firsthand that kids can’t learn on an empty stomach.”

Free school meals will be officially implemented in July 2023. More information can be found via MDE or through your school district.
